Camp Stevens was established by order of the Secretary of War, J. P. Benjamin, by letter to Gov. Joseph Brown dated Feb. 11, 1862 and ordered by Georgia Gov. Brown on Feb. 14th. These Camps of Instruction were used for induction, training, medical clearance and issuance of supplies for soldiers. There were three others in the state. Camp Davis near Savannah was named after President Jefferson Davis. Camp McDonald was located near Marietta.
